A Geographic
Information System (GIS) is a computer system capable of assembling, processing,
storing and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified
according to their locations.
ArcView from ESRI is the most popular desktop
GIS and mapping software. Providing data visualisation, query, analysis, integration
capabilities and with the ability to create and edit geographic data.
Add-ons development through Microsofts COM standards and Visual Basic
integrated usage to enhance its functionnality. It starts the family of ArcGIS
as a scalable geographic data creation software system for management, integration,
analysis, and dissemination. For individual, corporate or global utilisation.
NeoSYS
developed an interface between ArcView and a geographically referenced image
database.
Adding information to images and then grouping them in collections allows
it to perform spatial queries retrieving data in a given geographical zone
and is being used for underwater research by French IFREMER.
